Valentine’s Day had a full load of athletic events on the road. Men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, and women’s lacrosse all competed today. Women’s lacrosse and baseball competed in their first games of the season, while both basketball teams look to finish their respective seasons.

Women’s lacrosse traveled to St. Marys College to take on the Seahawks. Rookie Megan Shallock stole the show for Virginia Wesleyan scoring a team high five goals. The rookie wasn’t the only one with a standout game. Junior goaltender Madison Carroll recorded a game high 11 saves against the Seahawks. The Marlins fought hard after finding their footing during the game. Despite hard fought efforts, the Marlins fell 18-12. The team finds themselves at home for the next contest. The Marlins will take on the all-women’s Meredith College Feb 28 at 4 p.m. at Trinder Field.

Men’s basketball continued to show their conference dominance by blowing out Washington and Lee University. The Marlins secured a 71-53 victory with sophomore Khory Moore leading the way with 26 points. Moore was also five-for-five at the free throw line, and he sunk seven out of 9 three point field goal attempts. The Marlins maintain their second spot in the conference, and they only have two games left in the regular season. They return the Fish Tank Feb 18 to take on conference opponent Hampden-Sydney University at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball earned an overtime win against Guilford College. The Marlins held the Quakers to zero points in the last two minutes of regulation and the beginning three minutes of overtime. Their defense and clutch scoring landed them a 69-62 conference win. Brittany Glasco led the victory with 16 points. Nancy Kelly showed her dominance by sinking all eight free throw attempts she faced. The Marlins have bumped up to the fourth spot in the conference, and they have two games remaining in their regular season. Their next matchup will be Feb 17 at Lynchburg College at 7 p.m.

Men’s baseball opened up their season in Salisbury, Maryland. The Salisbury Seagulls took the first of two games from the Marlins. The Marlins scored twice in the top of the fourth and the top of the ninth, and they had a lone run in the top of the seventh. Despite five strong runs, the Marlins fell by one the Seagulls 6-5. The second game was closer than the first. Salisbury scored one run consistently for four innings and put away three in the fifth inning. By the bottom of the fifth the score was 7-3 in favor of the Seagulls. The Marlins didn’t back down, and they scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game. The contest wouldn’t see a finish. The game will resume on Monday due to the darkness at Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m.

Saturday saw successes and the beginnings to what will most likely be strong seasons.
