The Virginia Wesleyan Men’s Lacrosse team fought tooth and nail against Ferrum College to grab their first win on the season.
The Marlins took on the Panthers at the DLH Complex at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Marlins came away with a 14-13 win after scoring three uncontested goals in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter.
The first quarter saw three goals for the Marlins in the first seven minutes. As time dwindled down Ferrum answered every single tally, and the ended the quarter tied at three apiece. The next 15 minutes played out almost identically to the first. Both teams tallied three goals and went to halftime deadlocked at six.
Ferrum gained momentum as the second half began putting away five goals compared to the two the Marlins grabbed. The fourth quarter rolled around, and momentum finally struck for Virginia Wesleyan. Senior Mike Moran scored four out of the six goals in the last 15 minutes for the Marlins. His last two of the game would be the one that tied the game and the one that won the game for Marlins.
Senior Joe Papetti finished the game with five goals and two assists to bolster the offense for the Marlins. Senior Rory Finnegan spent all 60 minutes between the pipes, and he saved 15 of the 28 shots he faced from the Panthers.
The Marlins next matchup will be against Eastern on March 7 at 1 p.m. The contest will be at Trinder Field at Virginia Wesleyan.
